Please help Linux techies !!

I have an external harddrive usb - I have looked at my bios (sony vaio laptop) and it doesn't seem to support booting from usb - I really want to start learning linux and put it on this drive so my question(s) are :

1) What is the best flavour of linux
2) Where do I get it from
3) How do I change my bios to support booting from usb

Appreciate any help

duncan,

1) http://distrowatch.com/ ,all you need to know about the various distro's. But if you dont have time to read info from the link, try Mandrake or Fedora. They are good distro's.

2) There are several sites from where you can get the distro's. They are available as ISO files. Download, burn and install them. Choose your distro and a simple search on google with the distro name will give you the download location.

Nice one...

I am downloading the Mandrake images - I have a sony vaio laptop - do you think I might have problems with drivers or is it all fairly good these days - last tried linux as Red Hat years ago and never really got much working...
