im gonna be dual booting my harddrive with winXP and linux
which version of linux do you recommend
the one i have right now is fedora core1 (kinda outdated)
its gonna be used mainly for programming

Yöda,

I dont find any distro's specific to programming. AFAIk any distro will do good for programming.

[ I use FC3 ]

Redhat 9!!!!! its still the best out there, meh suse aint that bad. FC can go.......nevermind. I seem to think that Redhats ego is getting way to big with there distros.... stick with 9 !!! :)

all linux distros are good..i.e. you cant pinpoint an issue with any..

you can download linux from http://www.linuxiso.org

TheMajor's suggestion is very important.... you will have to install windows first then linux....cause linus boot loader (lilo/grub) will overwrite windows MBR. this will do if you want to use linux bootloader to choose options for boot. If you want more adventure you can try windows bootloader(boot.ini in XP) then you have to search on LOADLIN.

If you're a beginner to linux start with a simple distro such as linspire(to get accustumoed) and then move on to tougher ones.

i have already loaded Suse 9.1 on my win XP laptop... and Linux took over the MBR. i have no problems with this but how do i get windows xp to default on the boot, so if i left it unatended after i tuned on the power and came back i could log into winxp not suse? i found something in Yast i believe and i selected windows as the default. when in the GUI for Suse, it shows that the settings have been saved after reboot, however it had no effect on the actual boot menue.
thanks
