Gents and Gentesses,

I am interested in building a small home environment and was curious to know what options exist for creating a UNIX Domain controller environment that can join Windows based PC systems. I've doing some on-the-side research, but I figured some of you might have previous knowledge on the subject and could point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

You can build a Linux Domain Controller using SAMBA, however there are some major restrictions. You can have centralized logins, have PC's join the domain as if it were a Windows server, and even have roaming profiles and login scripts.

What you CANNOT do however, is add Windows Servers that have products on them that heavily rely on Active Directory, such as Exchange Server, and the Microsoft SQL server. Now, for a home environment it is very unlikely you are going to run a Exchange server of course.
