knoppix 5.0 connection problem

i have just installed linux on my computer knoppix 5.0 and i can't figure out how to connct via ethernet or wireless to my router.
i am new with linux
i have a speedstream dsl modem and a d link wireless router and i can't figure out how to connect.

can someone please give me steps on how to make both work
