Default Kernel Panic!!!

I am running simplymepis 7.0 (it's amazing by the way) and yesterday I installed Qemu and installed a virtual machine inside it.
All went well until.....I RESTARTED!!! I got the message:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

So I rebooted and selected MEPIS at sda1, previous kernel (if any) and booted into the old kernel and everything was fine. So Qemu did something to my kernel.

What in the world happened to my kernel and how do I go about fixing this?

Torvalds was contemptuous of Microsoft's claims and has asked Redmond to name the patent infringements so that their veracity can be challenged and workarounds found.
"Naming them would either make it clear that Linux is not infringing at all (which is quite possible, especially if the patents are bad), or would make it possible to avoid infringing by coding around whatever silly thing they claim,"

"So the whole 'We have a list and we're not telling you' should tell you something. Don't you think that if Microsoft actually had some really foolproof patent, they'd just tell us and go, 'nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!'?"

Default Re: Kernel Panic!!!

Kernel panics are the "big end" of Linux installs. the only real option is to re-compile your Kernel. if I were you I'd use a LiveCD to backup any files (using the old kernel and do a complete re-install

It's not worth the aggravation, however if you wanted to try your hand troubleshooting the system work through the suggestions below

kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown-block - LinuxQuestions.org

Cheers
