Ever wondered how to install Linux on your PS3? If you answered “yes”, I recommend heading over to IBM and reading the detailed how-to posted by Jonathan Bartlett. Thanks to Jerry M. for the linkage.

It is unusual for gaming consoles to allow foreign operating systems to be installed on them. Since consoles are usually sold at a loss, they are usually locked down to prevent games from running on them without the publisher paying royalties to the console developer. Sony decided to open up the PS3 console a little bit, and allow third-party operating systems to be installed, with the caveat that they do not get accelerated graphics.

That's kind of cool that they give us a guide. Remember when Sony had a linux pack for PS2? Came with a harddrive, keyboard, mouse, network adapter... It was pretty cool.

graphic UI or not, what you do get is a machine capable of doing massive amounts of floating point math

probably kick major azz doing folding at home and other projects like that

Does SuperPi work on it?

I would have got one if it didn't cost £477.97 with "Resistance: Fall of Man" aka $939... :(
