Hey, I've never tried linux before but recently I saw a few videos of xgl, and was exactly like this emoticon :amazed:

So should I start out by installing ubuntu? I took that linux distribution test and I got matched up with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Mandriva. Do you recommend this OS?

Another thing is if I install ubuntu can I still use windows xp, and will I not lose all my files, programs, etc? Can I have both?

And what would I do afterwards to get XGL (I wanna rotate my desktop so badly)

Here is a little info about my system
- Amd 64 Athlon single core I forget the other info about it
- 1 gb ram
- about 50 gigs to spare
- nvidia graphics card 256 mb

So should I go for it?

Thanks

Bender,

Most definitely try Linux: My suggestion would be to try the Live CD first to see if you like it, so in short yes I recomend this OS Yes you can still use windows XP just install Linux on the spare 50Gig space by repartioning the system using Gparted via the Ubuntu Live CD

http://www.hezardastan.org/breezy_xp_dualboot/en/breezyinstall.html#createditpartgparted

Even better backup your Data and do a repartition of your HDD & a reinstall

Going one step further, I'd get another HDD. It just saves a whole lot of headaches if anything happens

as for D/L XGL & installing XGL: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=127090

Installing XGL is a steep Learning curve, so be prepared

ciao,

Jake

I personally say boo to Ubuntu, but that's just because i don't like GNOME. Either way, it's a fine distro to start on. I suggest Xandros. Very nice and easy linux.

I agree with the General. Im a n00b to linux and Ive found Kubuntu very easy to adapt to. Its pretty simple and there is tons of support for it.

I downloaded the Ubuntu live cd image and burned it. I changed my bios to boot from cd-rom first. It takes a while and then it just says failure to boot or something like that. I used this one

"64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD
For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips."

From http://ubuntu.cs.utah.edu/releases/6.06/

I don't understand my system is AMD 64 athlon it's the best match for me out of the three.

Should I try the first one instead?

"PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure."

thanks

I reburned it using something besides nero and it worked. Tis pretty cool besides the fact that I couldn't get a good resolution for my monitor.
