i installed ubuntu dapper, set it up with Xgl and Compiz, and WOW! I havent booted XP for any significant length of time for 2 days now, and am learning how to use linux with the help of a couple of friends and the internet at a fast pace.

I like it much better than XP. It is so much more logical, and easier to use (in the GUI side anyway) I am only going to use XP for gaming, and photoshop work etc.

Just to say that. Pretty pointless thread really, just to express my opinon i suppose.

There are games for Linux too.

All ID games ever made and all the Unreal Tournament games.

Just to name a few. :)

Turning this into a not-so-pointless thread; could you post links/suggest things that helped you switch to linux? I've always wanted to try it, and when i tried Ubuntu and SUSE, i never really got to know how to fully use either linux distro, and my one harddrive had to be completely wiped clean to get back to XP.

Well, i started with ubuntu ages ago, before this computer had internet at all, i found it very hard, especially when installing new programs was concerned, as i had to download the source elsewhere and compile it etc.

Now i have the internet, it is very easy to get programs and updates etc. I decided to have another go as a project for the summer holidays. A big thing that made me do this was the discovery of "ndiswrapper," a program that lets you use windows wireless drivers, giving me the internet access. I got it going with the ATi binary drivers, Xgl and Compiz, which made it very visually appealing. I then put IM and media players on, and found I could survive only on linux, for most things. As I researched that evening, and learnt new stuff, i found i needed XP less and less, and I only use it for, as i said, 3d modelling, photoshop and gaming really.

I would say go for it, give it another go. If you dont like it, delete the partition, and instead of formatting, pop the xp cd in, and go the the console, and "fix mbr" to get rid of GRUB. I would recommend ubuntu, as it is one of the easiest distros to pick up. Also, unless you have a friend that is very good at linux, :D i dont recommend you trying things like Xgl straight away, untill you have got the hang of things.

EDIT: for the id games, and ut2004, do i need to buy linux versions, or will the normal discs install on both? Also, is gaming better on linux, as the OS uses alot less resources. OS + Xgl + Compiz with IM, Browser etc leaves me using only 220MB ram. try that on XP! :p it never uses the 1GB swap partition i made.

Snake eyes,

Nice to see you again man, So Linux didn't take huh? Some people don't take to Linux and that's fine, maybe neither of these distros suited you. I know alot of people say SUSE is the greatest distro on the planet cause it's easy, but I found it painful. But I remember when I first started with linux at TAFE (youd call it college in the US.) the linux lab was using Redhat and I HATED it, I didn't know there were other distros out there I thought that redhat was the ONLY distro, but I went online did some reading and found a few I thought looked ok, SUSE being one of them but I finally Settled on Ubuntu, didn't like 5.10 so I moved to Mandrake 9.2 then onto a less 'bloated" distro PCLinuxOS and I've been in love ever since

as for Links and such to get you started, the best way is to maybe do a Base course on Linux, like I did at TAFE Learning Commands, Installing distos etc. then while setting your system up you will run into problems installing, configuring etc. Google is the best bet for this, google these problems and start reading, also Computer Forums such as TF and LinuxQuestions.org are a great source for Linux Info

Jake,

Good to see you too! :D The story goes that i used one of my Seagate drives to be dedicated Ubuntu. It was working for a while, but i just couldn't get used to Linux. I tried and tried to get back to XP, but the dang drive just wouldn't want to be reformatted! I don't remember how i eventually got it to work, but i did. I tried SUSE last week, using my mother's old harddrive only for her to tell me she's still got stuff on it that she needs. Luckily, i was using the Live CD.

Currently, i've got one question. Can i burn a multi-ISO distro (say Fedora Core 5, it's 5 ISOs) to a single DVD? With the ones you (jake) sent me, i found that, yes it is possible (most presentable was Fedora Core 4. 5 ISOs, one DVD), but i just want to be sure.

My current plan is to first, either one, get my mother's files off her drive so i can use it, or two, get a harddrive to be dedicated Linux, whichever distro i may choose.

BTW, your linux networking link doesn't work. And as a side note, i came across the "distro chooser" before and when i went through it, the pics were Kubuntu (1), Fedora Core (2), and Ubuntu (3).

In terms of schooling, my high school only offers 2 computer-oriented classes; programming (which i'm taking this coming year) and networking (which i hope to take my senior year, i'm becoming a junior, or 11th grade).

Would you suggest any books like "Complete Idiot's Guide To Linux?"

Snake,

The thing with books is they become outdated real quick, particularly when dealing in IT becaue it is changing all the time. But if you want a book like with commands and stuff for quick reference then Linux in a nutshell and Linux for dummies 6th edition are good books.

That sucks that your school doesn't offer any "linux" orriented stuff, If you don't have college or anything where you are, then it is really a matter of how keen you are. as you will have to do it all yourself. I have some couse notes I could send share with you via email or whatever if you like?

but honestly start by inststalling a system and configuring (installing extra programs and such)

you can't burn 5 CD Isos onto a DVD you have to D/L the DVD image

Hope this Helps,

Jake

I'd really appreciate the course notes. I'll PM you my email.

I'm currently researching colleges, so i don't know what i'll find.

ooo i got that on a friends linux partition. i was using Partition Magic, and it wouldnt move, resize or format the linux partition. i tired the windows disc manager, and it wiped that partition out no questions asked, hehe.

Yeah, I'm a total convert. I wasn't planning on it, but I fscked something up formatting the partitions and lost everything. But I'm not really complaining too much because Linux is so much more efficient and enjoyable than Windoze.
