What type of gui linux version would be good to have a simple webserver on?

My old computer cant handle win xp and from what i've heard win 98 isn't very good with servers.

Any other versions of windows i might try such as win 2000 or nt for servers?

Or can you reccomend a noob friendly gui linux version that's good for servers.

Thanks a bunch guys :)

well.. not really low end..

but... 19 gig drive...

it's not going to be a huge webserver.

1 gig max.

i guess i should post my specs...

when i get to it i'll edit this post.

gloomer,

For a server.... if your machine can't handle XP it probably is at the lower end of the spectrum. The best Server distro I've come across is CentOS now the recomended Minumums for CentOS, based on x86:

128Mg RAM Text based, 256 Graphical/ 500Mg Diskspace. for CentOS 3+4 800Mg Diskspace for other architectures 512 RAM and 800Mg Diskspace.

D/L here: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=centos

you can find more info Here: http://www.centos.org/product.html

Failing that slackware would be your Best Bet: http://www.slackware.com/

if you want to look at Other distros try this Link:

FYI: Devil Linux loooks Good!

Also here is a Guide to setting up a Webserver with CentOS 4.3 even though it says 64 bit doesn't make that much of a difference:

Hope this Helps,

Jake

well actually off a reccomendation i'm trying

mandrake, which i've heard is great for nubs.

But of course i'll look into your distros as well.

I'm kinda a noob at linux. I looked at the gui version of knoppix a little while and then dropped it.

Hope these versions are noob friendly :)

bah.. mandrake installed and everything but it's way to slow..

gonna try slackware or CentOS
