I read about this earlier; I wonder how well they'll do without the support of Oracle (or any other large business)?

Without support? Did you see the list of people backing it?

Google, Red Hat, The GNOME Foundation, etc.

I wouldn't worry. Unless I was MS Office. :p

lol, reading fail on me :p Sounds like they'll be a decent alternative now.

^wtf they already are a great alternative to Office.

Absolutely. There was just a bit of fear behind Oracle's involvement with obtaining Sun Microsystems, who backed OpenOffice to the core. A lot of people were fearful that the OpenOffice we know and love could tank, which would have a much greater impact than you would think. With Oracle now "owning" the project, it was possible. But this article pretty much lays a firm foundation for OpenOffice well into the future, no matter what road it ends up taking. The fact it has an open source nature makes it a hard project to kill, but so many people rely on it so heavily that supporting it is a tremendous job in itself, but it's good to see some big wig organizations standing behind it.
