Is there anywhere I can download Linux for free and what would be the best version to download?

"Best" doesn't really exist. Regarding "best for you", I would say Fedora, SuSE (harder to install the latest version, though, unless you pay for it), or Mandrake.

horndude is probably gonna tell you to go with Slackware. I'll tell you that right up front.

There is nothing wrong with Slackware, in fact, I like it quite a bit. But what distro you use is up to you. Look around and pick the one that appeals to you the most.

As for version, the newest is best IMHO.

package management, ie how precompiled software is installed and checked for dependencies

how complete they are as far as software that comes with it, many are lacking these days

support as far as a knowledge base and following at the various forums

how much they change from release to release

how long theyve been around

whether they are original or based on one the the 4 major distros

install gui's and how much automation there is in hardware detection

What does anyone think of SUsE. Any problems with it. What distribution would anyone recommend and why.
