You can get away with just knowing the command "httpd -k restart" which you'll need once you've made changes to the config. The httpd.conf file is a test file so you can edit it with any text editor.

Depending on which distro you go for there may well be some app included with it to help in configuring the httpd.conf file, but it is pretty easy to make sense of.
 
im a total noob and i have an apache server and mysql server running on fedora core.

The complete setup was simple.. though it took me a while to realise i had to start the services.

Though really i should have known that, lol

Then you just gotta remember http://localhost points to /var/www/ or similar

I think that is about it.. there is a little more setup available, but i only use it for development anyway behind a firewall.
