Hello guys, I'm new to forum but have gotten of lot of info from here. " Thanks "

I have a degree in Computer Information Systems and over seven yrs experience within th IT sector as a Technical Support Specialist. I'm looking to start going back to school online but I want to use my current degree in the medical field or biotechnology. Unsure what direction to go with or what direction will technology be heading 10, 15, etc.. years from now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If there is one thing that technology has taught us is that you can never predict whats next. It was less than 15 years ago when someone by the name of Bill Gates made a statement that there would never be a need for more than 64MB of memory in a PC. Today we see systems with up to 16GB of memory.

So there is no way to even attempt to try and predict cause the future in technology is never certain. With the onset of cloud computing, the internet becoming more and more of a common user interface than even face to face talking.

640K Mak :).

The IT sector is the fastest changing of all so there really is no way to tell. Of course technology will be used for medical advancements but just how far it will go no one can tell. It's such a volatile industry you would be just as well off going to a fortune teller!

Yes, and the global economy is shaping IT industries as well, and since that is volatile right now, who knows where it's going ? Hopefully there will more people getting into IT, I have read that numbers for enlisting in colleges for IT is a bit down, the lowest since 2001 I think the article said.

Well I think it has been summed up a bit already, IMO. Basically, who can know where it will be 10, 15 yrs. from now ? However, if you visit U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, you can do searches on IT job growth expectations. Trying that might help.

Still, only time will tell where the state of IT will be years from now, but at least at the above-listed site, you can get some kind of synopsis on growth possibilites as it seems it could be in the future. They give estimations up to 2016 I think it is.

EDIT: Ok, I couldn't find anything on biotechnology and computers, however I did a lookup in Information Technology, and just using a random example, I found Systems Manager - and It says that in 2006 there were 264,000 people in that particular job capacity, and will be about 307,000 by 2016.

*** I know this isn't biotechnology that I found but I can imagine the outlook is even better if you get into the medical side of IT. Medical services will grow very fast for sure.

Remember, this is the equivalent to looking in a mirror ball, so it is an estimate only. Mileage may vary.

So 16GB is the maximum memory a PC can have right now?
Theres no hardware at the moment.. capable of more?
