So the computer repair business is drying up for the average tech, especially here in NY, you got at least one tech or someone who can repair their own machine so I am looking to provide some service in the computer world to get business going again, any ideas please?

I tried posting an ad about providing PC services on Craigslist about 2 years ago, and within 15 minutes I got an email saying CL took my post down due to "inappropriate content"! At least where I'm from, it seems the local PC techs take their business (and competition) very seriously.

No offense, but if i had a good, viable business idea I would be doing it :p

PC tech repair is going to make less and less as technology grows. It's the nature of the business honestly. Look 10 years ago, someone who did desktop support on PC's make 50k easily and were highly regarded, today, i assume it's around 30k at this point.

Repair home desktops and doing hardware repair on consumer level products is very difficult to make a living off of. The problem now adays is in order to actually make money you have to charge more than people are willing to pay. 10 years ago you could charge $150 to replace a hard drive because a PC was worth 10x that. Today, if any repair costs more than $100 its not worth it because you can get a brand new one for $250. It's the nature of the industry and hardware is only going to get cheaper making it more difficult to make a living off hardware.

Where the money is right now is professional services or consulting. Doing a specialized service like storage, server solutions, ect is where you can make money in todays markets. Just to give you an idea, we hired a specialist to implement a 3rd party (symantec) archiving solution, they charge around $300 an hour. Find a niche that you enjoy and can specialize in.

Thanks for the advice! Problem with this is NY is flooded with IT people so any IT services needed is far and few, needless to mention the pay rate.
