Hi,

I am Aarti.I have done my Computer Science Engineering in 2008.After that I have worked as a Software Tester for two years. In 2010,I got married and I had come to the UK.From then onwards I have been applying for jobs in Software testing. But I did not get any calls from companies. So I am thinking of doing my higher studies(Masters).I am not able to decide about which field to specialise in.Could anyone please suggest...

Thanks.

Do you still want to work in IT? If so get your Masters in a computer field. You could also look into getting certifications.

where did you obtain your degree
as some UK employers are very picky about hiring people with degrees obtained outside the UK and would rather employ people who obtained their degrees in the UK
Therefore if you did top up your degree with a UK university it could put you in a better position.

Also if you are currently working in any IT based job at the moment this would help you get back into software testing section

I have to say though, the IT industry in the UK has a large number of qualified staff to pick from, in fact I think there are too many people with IT qualifications and not enough jobs, so it can be very hard to break into the industry.
It can be so hard that even people with degrees can't even get 1st line support jobs, never mind specialising in certain areas

I'm not sure it makes sense to get a master's degree just because you are currently unable to find a job. You will likely just put yourself in debt and be right back in this situation in a couple years. I have found that experience matters more than a degree.

Thank you all for your replies.Yes I want to work in the IT field.I have done my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering from an Indian university.I currently have experience only with software testing. So I thought may be by doing Masters would introduce me to new areas of computer science.I also want to know whether software testing is a good area to work in.

Do what you enjoy, if you like testing work in that field. Don't go into something though solely because you feel its a good field to work in.

In IT experience is key, and while getting a masters may help you land a job, the reality is that a master degree in IT isn't worth as much as experience. I think you would be better served getting experience under your belt rather than more schooling.

maybe your college or your degree name is'nt being appriciated in the market.

doing your Master degree in a well known college in computer since might help you finding your job.

try this academy rank

hi,

The way you sell yourself is very important in the UK and qualifications dont really matter as long as you can emphasis your experience.

for instance my CV has

name, address etc.

everything i can do all neatly displayed and tailored per job

qualifications in brief,

references if needed or if i can fit them on.

but basically yeah, start with what you can do and no more than 2 pages ;)

- personally after working in the UK industry and being fresh from college i would not go and do your masters, you just need to keep looking and find an employer looking to give an unexperienced guy a break.
It used to be that companies had the time to nurture but now management pressure employers to get the person who can get in BOOM and get the job done right now.

unfortunatly that means having the experience to go with the qualifications but if you're qualified for the roles you're applying for it should be fine.

tips: dont just apply to companies who are hiring, it sounds silly but email your CV to companies who arnt. just mark them "HR department" or if you can get a phone number of a guy to speak to or an email then do it.

be unconventional, if you're good then knock up something to SHOW THEM other than just your CV. it could pay off.

and if you have the spare time, LEARN A NEW QUALIFICATION.... sounds difficult? hell no - you can use the internet to learn a new qualification and just pay for the test.

example: myself, currently doing my LPI101 and 102 qualifications for linux certs and i have the study material, exam to sit is 120 quid. done
