what is the difference between computer engineering and computer science degrees?

The former is focused on the lower level physical aspects and the latter is focused on higher level uses. Its creating the tool versus using the tool. Both should complement each other.

Some of the bigger names are MIT, CalTech, and Carnegie Mellon. There are plenty of great tech schools. Look for what you want to do/learn, and find schools with associated research projects. You should then find a nice spot to spend 4 or so years.

All the math you can get, including statistics and writing classes. If you can grab a programming language or two, that will help you as well.

Degrees get your resume considered. Experience and referrals get you jobs.
