China banned the registering of personal Internet domain names
and people who have their own websites could lose them, the South China
Morning Post said, citing a government regulation that came into effect yesterday.

on another note, if china successfully eradicates all --even remotely-- pornographic images from the everywhere, will this not increase the very crime they are trying to prevent? (assuming that is sexual related crimes)

It's to prevent freedom of speech glenskey, you see in the last 5+ years chinas youth has used the web as a place to talk about things that would land them in hot water with the government. The Flaen Gong religious sect, workers rights, freedom of speech etc all things that the Communist party don't like people to even think about.

The Pornographic ban is to prevent morral dissatisfaction for the people, but a interesting thing to note is that this law works on a teir system if you are a high party offical your allowed to look at prity much anything you like.

What if they use Linux with a proxy server?
The censoring program is an .exe, so Linux takes care of that.
It's also impossible to ban all the proxy servers out there.
