Default interested in learning linux

I just bought a cheap P3 233 for the purpose of learning Linux. My friend is helping me out and put Suse 9 on it as he said its probably the best for me to learn right now. like I said, he's helping me, but I wanted to hear, others advice for learning it. I prefer the text enviroment because it reminds me of DOS, and thats how I first learned computers. He showed me the basic commands and I have been looking around inside the box. what do I do now? Do I just start DLing programs and installing them to learn how to make stuff work or what? Any instructions or advice for exactly what to do would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,

Oh, my screen name has nothing to do with computing.
