Default hi to all

I'm an old duffer who shambles around trying this, that, and the other on computers.

I've got 4 sort of going at my house, and I also work on 10 more stations at our church. I sort of have them going, mostly.

I always try to get by on old stuff and try to find the "cheap" way.

I started out on the old Texas Instruments computer, and went up from DOS, win 95, etc.

Welcome to Tech-Forums, from one old guy to another.

As long as the "old stuff" is about as fast as what you have, performance will not go down. But once it gets so old, it gets too expensive to bother with anymore.

Shoot, I'd edit your post for ya Trotter but I can't (you meant to say "one old" but said "one one")

Welcome to Tech-Forums! Are you past Windows 98 yet?
Cheap is always a good way to go, I say!

Yeah. I worked through Win 98, Win 2000 and Win ME (bad program), and now stumble around in Win XP. Nothing on Vista. From what I hear, I don't think that's a bad thing. Trial and error is my thing.

Strangely enough, they're all old wheezers with win 95 in one, and win 98 in the others. Kind of a strange deal. I've got 'em set up in a room. Got printers on 5 of them, and switches to have most of 'em printing. It's kind of a thing to introduce youth to what the computers can do. Word processing, etc. Most of us see very young people who look they were born with a computer--3rd graders or so who are very savvy. Most of our kids have no computers at home, and this is sort of their first experience with them. The big problem is having a few people with them and keep 'em off porn sites, chat rooms, etc. We lock it when no one is there. Bring 'em in and let 'em go on the computers. For this level, win 95 and win 98 do fine, and are OK. They are solid programs for this.

eek, 95/98 are prone to system crashes. upgrading to 2000/xp/vista would reduce errors and restarts.

OpenDNS or look in my sig. It is free, and allows you to filter the content before it ever gets to the computer. Check it out.
