Microsoft Corp.'s Windows OneCare PC security bundle is now available to the general public.

The consumer-facing tool, which features virus scanning, firewall protection, data backup and PC cleanup tools, has been released to the Windows Live portal as part of Microsoft's plan to extend the beta testing process to a wider audience.

As previously reported, Windows OneCare was recently refreshed to handle automatic scans of files received from the MSN Messenger IM client and the ability to back up computer data to external hard drives.

The application was also tweaked to perform on-demand virus scans during a limited, invite-only beta process.

Microsoft plans to release its subscription security program before the summer and to challenge its main rivals on pricing, it has emerged.

Windows OneCare Live marks Microsoft's long-anticipated entry into the consumer antivirus market, which has been the domain of specialised vendors, led by McAfee and Symantec. Two years ago, Microsoft announced its intent to offer antivirus products when it bought Romanian antivirus software developer GeCad Software.

The software giant plans to release the final version of OneCare before summer and to charge about $50 per year for the product, sources familiar with the company's plans said on Monday. The company is scheduled to announce the pricing and availability details later this week, they said. A Microsoft representative had no immediate comment.

Microsoft has revealed more details of its all-in-one PC care service dubbed OneCare Live.

Already in beta, the subscription-based package will be officially released in the US in June from retailers and via the Web. A year's subscription will cost $49.95 and will cover up to three personal computers.

The suite will offer anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall components, as well as performance optimisation utilities and back up and restore tools. Technical support - in the form of e-mail, phone and chat - will be included as part of the package.

After a year in beta testing, Microsoft on Wednesday took the wraps off Windows Live OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC care subscription service. That package includes antivirus, anti-spyware and PC tuning and backup tools, along with free support for $49.95 USD per year.

In an interview Tuesday, OneCare Business Strategy Manager Sam McManus told BetaNews that the service is targeted at the average computer user, and will let them "focus on enjoying their online experience."

"The reason we built [Windows Live OneCare] is the frustration we have heard from users," McManus said. "It's too complicated." According to Microsoft, very few customers ever perform backups, most have out of date security software, and over 70 percent do not use a firewall.
