Save And Paste Form Data In Firefox

Many websites require a signup before their services can be fully used. While this is usually necessary to offer the user his own profile page with custom settings it is sometimes used to grab user profiles to sell them to the highest bidder. But no matter the reason it is always a nuisance for the user who has to enter the same - real or fake - data over and over again.
The Firefox add-on InFormEnter tries to ease the nuisance by providing options to save and paste form data more easily into web forms. It uses a Status Bar icon which can be used to quickly activate or deactivate the add-on. This is useful because of the way it behaves when activated.
If InFormEnter is active it will display a small icon next to any web form. That icon can be used to pick previously saved data which will then be pasted automatically into the form. The Firefox add-on makes use of profiles to provide access to different data sets. It is basically possible to create a few profiles, for example fake, business or private, and switch between them depending on the visited website.

After installing the add-on it is important to enter the first form data into the options which is the most convenient way to configure the add-on. There are already some entries in the profile like FirstName, LastName or City but those would be the values entered into the form if selected. This means the user has to actually add data to them to become effective.
This is done by adding the information in front of every item and to separate the data from the menu titles. The FirstName entry would be changed to John#FirstName for instance.
While this is the best way to enter the data it is also possible to add data after entering it into a form. This however would add a new parameter (like LastName or FirstName) to the software. So to overcome that problem the user can use the same formatting used in the options. A new phone number would be entered like 0000#phone. This adds the phone parameter to the menu and will fill in 0000 when selected from the menu.
The add-on comes with two keyboard shortcuts. [Insert] will automatically open the menu to pick an entry from while [CTRL] will insert the text at the position of the cursor.
There are a few additional hints for the profile page:
  • One line in editbox will be one menu item
  • Use # to separate input text and menu item name
  • Use #GP:[N]#[Menu item name] to Generate Password (pass length=N)
  • Use #RLP#[Menu item name] to Repeat Last Password
  • Use #SR# to insert menu separator
  • Use double # (##) to input single # in form
  • Use double @ (@@) to break line in multiline editboxes
The marker's position can be changed in the options as well. The default marker position is behind each form which can have the result that a new line is added to the form. The other options include to shorten the form so that the marker can be placed in the same line or to float the marker.
