Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, built into Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows 2000 Server Editions runs on a default TCP/IP port of 3389. For security reasons, you may wish to change this.

Please note: changing the RDP operating port will prevent the Remote Assistance feature from working correctly.

To change the RDP operating port:

Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp

Insert or change a value with the following details:
Data Type:DWORD
Value Name:portNumber
Value:The number of the port you wish the RDP service to operate on, e.g. 12345
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Note: It is best to avoid any ports that are commonly used by other protocols. For help in doing this, see our TCP/IP Port List.
