When printing, Windows creates temporary work files before sending print information to the printer. Large printer jobs, especially using colour postscript drivers can often result in files of tens of megabytes being created. The default directory used is:
%SystemRoot%\system32\spool\PRINTERS
On systems where disk space on the root drive is an issue, or on print servers, it may be beneficial to move the default spool directory to another drive, thus reducing the chances of system failures due to lack of disk space.
To change the default spool directory:
Stop the spooler service via the Services MMC plug-in or using the following command:
net stop spooler
Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
Change or add the following value:
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value Name: DefaultSpoolDirectory
Value: The full path to the directory required
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
