The newly-released beta version of Internet Explorer 7 debuts a new Microsoft technology designed to protect the user from phishing (fraudulent) websites. The filter cross-checks the visited URL against a database of known black-listed sites updated by Microsoft and warns the user should the site appear in the blacklist.
The Phishing Filter can be run in one of three operational modes: disabled, manual, and automatic.
DisabledWith the Phishing Filter disabled, no automatic checking takes place and the manual option to check a particular site becomes greyed out.
ManualWith the Phishing Filter in manual mode, the user has the option of checking any particular site by clicking on the Check this website menu option.
AutomaticEvery URL the user visits is automatically checked against the blacklist
To alter the Phishing Filter settings
Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PhishingFilter
Insert or change a value with the following details:
Data TypeWORD
Value Name:Enabled
Value:0 - Disabled
1 - Manual
2 - Automatic
Close any open Internet Explorer windows for the change to take effect.
