The guys over at Piper Jaffray, who most likely have never held a game controller in their hands, are making headlines again with their predictions. This time they are predicting the number of hardware units to be sold in the coming years for all major systems in the US.

As always, predictions are just that, predictions. The numbers are optimistic and overall hardware units sold are predicted to grow 30% from 2006 to 2011. Most of that growth will be in handheld hardware, which has been tipped to grow 45% over the next cycle. Software growth is predicted to go from $7.0 billion in 2005 to $10.0 billion in 2008.

Piper Jaffray also predicts PS3 and Revolution to hit the US market late 2006, and that we will see a new HD equipped version of SonyÂ’s PSP mid-2006.

Hardware market share for the next cycle is predicted to be 45%-50% for Sony, Microsoft at 35%-40% and Nintendo with 15%. Xbox 360 is predicted to be the market leader through 2008, but with Sony quickly catching up.
