PSone games saving on Ps2 slimline

Hi all!
I have recently bought a PS2 slimline, had no problem so far. However, when I try to play PSone games, I am unable to save them, even with a PSone memory card. Could it be because the PSone memory card is not an official one, only compatible?

Does the new PS2 have a heating/cooling ratio problem?

No heating problem that I have experienced. But I am not a heavy player and the most the PS2 has been on is two-three hours.
