If you hold the PS button down and go to "Adjust Devices" there is a check box to turn off the mic.

Found it when I was hooking up my bluetooth headset.

This is brandy new with the patch that added headset support.

Sony just said the light on the front of the controller is for VR!

How about that. They had foresight and didn't try to nickel and dime us later like other companies do.
