Playing ps1 backups on unmodded fat ps2

I don't know if this is possible. Does anyone have experience with this? I tried the free mcboot cd with the ulaunch elf usb but the ps2 doesn't wan't to load the dvd.
Even if that would've worked could I play my PS1 backups on there?
