How To Log On To Central Station?

Hi guys,
I just received my network dvd and registered online in the playstation webpage.
I use a MOTOROLA SURFboard cable modem and a D-LINK router.
I have broadband but when I connect the ethernet cable from router to ps2 I get nothing! The lid on the router stays off indicating that there is no device to receive the data.
