Default Charging controller question

I just got the new PS3 slim and was wondering if the controller has to charge off the PS3, or can i plug it into my PC to charge it? Also it said if you press the PS button during gameplay it will show the controller's battery life which it apparently isn't doing unless i'm blind. Any other cool PS3 info to checkout would be great as well.

Thanks,
Nate
