xbox mods

[always a newbie]

I have an original xbox and was wanting to mod it. Can I do a software mod and use a USB flash drive to store games on? Do I need yo soft mod it or just fab up a controller to accept the memory stick? Any help or knowledge would be great.
P.S. Please respond in a way a 5yr old can understand
