Xbox 360 Drive Drive Broken or Laser Issue?

My Xbox 360 has the open tray error where it can't read any game discs or DVD discs either.

I'm wondering if there is a way to determine if I need to replace the whole DVD drive or just the laser in the DVD drive. The model of the DVD drive is a Phillips & Lite-on dg-16d2s.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I have fixed a good number of these errors and I have never replaced just the laser. I always replace the whole drive. I would recommend finding that exact same model on ebay and buy it. Now after you receive it, don't put it in there right away. What you need to do is open up both of the drives and lay them side by side. Then take the firmware board out of each drive and switch them. So your final product will have the new drive you bought on ebay with the old drive's firmware board in it. Then put that drive in your Xbox. And there you go, problem fixed.
