Y500 issues with gaming

I recently go this laptop Lenovo IdeaPad 15.6" Laptop 6GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive Y500 - 59359560 - Best Buy an I'm having trouble running games with the frame rate i should be... I get about 20 fps on guild wars 2 low settings and can only run sleeping dogs acceptably at medium settings with a significantly lower resolution. Any advice would be very appreciated and i'm pretty stupid when it comes to computers so i would love if you dumbed everything down for me.

What are your GPU/CPU temps in-game and idle?

Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed:
Drivers | GeForce

And make sure SLI is enabled in the NVCP.

It's enabled and i have the latest driver but i have not idea how to check temp... is that really important?

If it's been used for a few months then yes. Use Coretemp to check the CPU temps and MSI Afterburner or eVGA Precision to check GPU temps.

If everything checks out then most likely you either have too many background tasks going on or the GT650m SLI setup is too weak for the res.

just bought it... but i do have a bunch running but they all look relatively important

The only thing you need running when you game is your game. Anything down in the taskbar near the clock can be closed out.
