thank you.

I hope you built your own, cuz if you get it from Best Buy or someplace like that, the company that made it like HP will have tons of crap for you that you most likely don't want. But I have lots of links to help you optimize XP.

Hope that helps.

All you really need to do with XP (on the OS side that is) is set yer virtual memory higher, and then analyze the processes you have going on in your system. A lot of them can be turned off if you know what they do.

After that, tweak your graphics (both desktop and gcard).

Make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers AND sound card drivers.

Other than that, if your machine runs like greased weasles as is, you're set.

by the virtual memory, do you mean the virtual paging file? i read a page that said set it to 1.5 times your ram size... and set the minimum and maximum to the same... so mines set at 1536/1536 cuz i have a gig of ram.... is that good? i have an 80gig hard drive.
and what do you mean by tweaking my desktop graphics... how do i want to tweak them?
thanks for the links.. ill read them on my days off.

Well you want a big page file to help you out, but there's kinda a give-n-take to it. Increasing your virtual memory can provide better performance (especially on machines with low RAM) but if you make the index HUGE, it'll actually slow you down.

1.5 to 2 times as big as your RAM is good. On a 512mb I'd say about 720 low, 1440 high, for the two fields. Of course, you just have to experiment and run benchtests and games and such to see.
