Stalker won't display on my monitor

So I'm trying to play Stalker but everytime I open the game my monitor goes black and then a screen pops up saying

"Monitor is working
Input 1: 125.7/150
Out of scan range
change Signal Timing"

I'm running Vista x64 with up to date drivers on a old p1110 CRT monitor.

From what I've gathered the game is trying to default to a resolution or refresh rate that my monitor can't handle. I've tried changing the resolution and refresh in control panel and used refreshlock to lock my refresh rate but I get the same problem.

Anyone know how I can fix this?
Or could the problem be something else?
Is there a way to adjust stalker settings without opening the game?

I got that error when I tried a HDMI to DVI cable....

can you tweak the refresh for the game in some setting it has?

I don't have it so that's why I say the above

I was hoping someone could tell me how to do that. I can't get in the game so I need a way of editing the settings through windows.

I think if you run the game in safe mode it should revert to a low res and let you configure it.
