Quake 2 on XP (?)

After recently formatting my hard drive, thus doing a fresh install of XP Home Edition, I can't install Quake 2. I'm using Directx 9.0c (maybe that's the problem, but bear in mind Quake 1 and Doom 95 work fine). The install wizard gets to about 75% and an pop-up error comes up saying something along the lines of:-

"The following error occured: -1"

I've tryed defragging beforehand, but it doesn't help.

Any suggestions?
