Some of the suggestions present will help, you can limit your startup programs through 'msconfig'; generally a lot of proccesses will remain active in memory and be idle, in the case of those, it won't tax your system. As mentioned, take a look at your controle panel, see what is using a lot of memory, google them, see if they are neccessary before you alter your startup routines, you can get by on a basic setup without sacrificing any functionality(less than 30 processes to hazzard a number); lol, never format the hardrive(unless your desperate). Do the basic maintenance as well(redundant, sorry).
 
all of the programs in the msconfig startup tab are not neccessary and windows works perfectly without them. right now i have 21 proccesses running :)
 
I have 30 processes running and my pc is in tip top shape.

I think thats cause i have 2gb of ram OWNAGE.

dude, Even if you had 64 KB of ram you would still have 30 processes running...


I have about 25 going.
