Since you asked, the only mod I use is STEP. My recent screenshots from Feb on are 2.2a which was released late last year. I do all the high quality options and it kills my VRAM.
I also put up some videos with no AA so it would be smoother on my Youtube. Definitely recommend waiting for an SSD before playing this game if you go that route.

I want to get the best graphical immersion but keep it very playable so.

It'll be playable on your machine. I downsample 2560x1600, force 8xTPAA, and use 8xAA when I can. That means having every bit overclocked to the extreme and only get like 30fps outside at best. Without all that, you should run it easy.
