Online Multiplayer in Borderlands

I got Borderlands yesterday, and my buddy did too. We've been trying to play online, but for some reason we get timed out trying to join the games. We can see each others hosted games, but we can't get connected to them.

We've both opened the ports, and we can sometimes connect to online games (from other hosts), but not all the time, and never each others hosted games.

Never herd that problem... Are you both set up on static Ip's?
