I've recently been having problems with Half Life 2, CSS, Half Life Deathmatch and the other Source engine games.
What was happening was I would start the game and the Valve logo (scary guy) would appear as normal, but just as it would normaly enter the main menu screen and start loading, I would get an error that said "Cannot set video mode. Press OK to retry in safe mode". I would get this error and it would just go into a loop every time after clicking OK.
I searched around the net with google and found on my video drivers where a large part of the conflict. So to fix this I simply downgraded my video drivers from 77.72 to 71.84 and the problem was gone.
