game screen resolution

My native screen resolution is 1200 x 1024 on a 20" CRT monitor and whenever i install a new game, when i come to play it, it doesnt actually fit on the screen as it is too large (the game). I need to go into options (which isnt always displayed - so a little bit of guess work is needed)nd change the resolution to something else (usually 1024 x 768), it doesnt matter what resolution i choose but it fixes the problem. However on Syberia 2 u cannot change the resolution (as it is pre-rendered). I was wondering if anybody knows how to fix the problem entirley as there is no way to adjust the settings for Syberia 2...

Are your video drivers up-to-date?

After you change the resolution, can you change it back to 1200 x 1024 and play it?

No my graphic drivers are not up-to-date, i am using an ati 9600pro and using the cataylst 3.6, i was thinking this is part of my problem but whenever i update from this the computer jus crashes out after several minitues of use, usually as i click an application. i have emailed ati several times about this problem but i havent ever received a reply. i have also do all the suggested things that i says for this problem(as it seems quite a popular one).
oh and yes whenever i change the resolution it always goes back to my native desktop resolution anyway(as it should)
i think it mite have something to do with my monitor as i have only recently bought it, i used to have a 15" one and i didnt have this problem with that(i still had the driver problem however
