Go to signup page and input CD key, then it prompts you to make a user/pass for that key. once key is used it's invalid and the user/pass is what you use from then on.

You just need to download the client. or borrow a friends CD's

In about 10 day and if you are not sure what are doing, you could easily get up and pass level 20 with one character.

However if you really want to explore the game world in 10 days, I would recommend that you do not play Night Elf as your starting location is rather isolated.

well MMORPGs have been around for a while and world of warcraft has been a huge succses which is also pretty known outside the gamer world so yes you have been sitting in a cave for 10 years.
WoW costs about 15$/month
