Far Cry is an amazing SP experience IF you have patience and don't mind reloading a ton especially nearing the end.
Far Cry is still the only FPS I have ever played where you really have to use your 'surroundings' to leverage any advantage you have in combat. It destroys HL2 in that department but this also means you really have to patient (hiding in the bushes, stalking, sneaking, listening to footsteps and voices, etc.). It really makes you feel like you're in actual combat. It's also very open unlike HL2. You can accomplish your objective or approach your enemy in multiple ways.
The graphics are amazing and the moving trees and foilage along with the great ambience sounds really makes it feel like you're in a jungle.
But the monsters (whatever they are called) are just stupid. Like others have said they kill you in like two swipes and some apes have armour so you better aim at their heads which is hard when you're running from rockets. The jumping apes almost made me want to throw my PC out the window. This game will certainly get on your nerves if you are unwilling to replay a level multiple times. The story is absolutely ludricous along with the voice acting. These several shortcomings can TOTALLY ruin the game for someone despite its brillance in the things I mentioned before.
In the end, Far Cry is not as good as HL2 (I haven't played FEAR yet) but its much better than Doom 3 and its clones IF you can handle Far Cry's "flaws".
