I'm referring to playing at 1280x1024 or higher with HDR, you can't use AA and HDR in Oblivion.

ok then, well I get playable rates at 1024*768 with hdr and everything high with my apg 7800gs

I do 800*600 w/ hdr, on high settings with playable framerates, on my 6800 Vanilla 16/6

If you want to have a really good experience with Oblivion a 6800 line card will be very nice.
It'll still chew that card up and spit it out like nothing. I've got 1gb of RAM OC'd to 233MHz, a dual core currently sitting at 2.565GHz and my 6800GT OC'd to 440/1200 from stock 350/1000, that's well beyond Ultra speeds. I still can't run it maxed out. I have to run it at 1280x1024 because I'm on an LCD and 10x768 just looks nasty.

So I suppose if you were on a CRT then you could knock it down to 1024 and it'd look decent enough and you could crank some settings up.

I'm running at 1280x1024 with HDR and everything set on high except for shadows on grass and trees and I have the landscape draw distance scaled back just a tad on my 7600GT, and it has never shown slow frame rates.
So no, you dont require a 7800GT to enjoy HDR.

I didn't mean to say that you could max it out, but you'd at least be able to run it at decent settings. I suppose I should've said atleast a Geforce 6800. The E3 demo ran on a 6800 vanilla so I figure that'd be the minimum you'd want.

remember oblivion at 8x6 is worthless coz its just like morrowind
if you want to get the best out of it u need at least good 50-60 frames at 10x7
