when you finish HL, download Action HL. Its a sort of matrix-like mod that gives your better weapons and bullettime. Its so awesome to be in bullettime while the apache is shooting at you becuase you can see the bullets fly by!

I wouldn't say that your a n00b if you cant see past the "shitty graphics" but your still very single minded. Your kind is lucky though because game makers dont give a crap about stories anymore they just want to show off their graphics.
I'm not saying you in paticular but the reason why game story lines suck is becasue of gamers that just think about graphics.
