Counter-Strike splash screen freeze

I was going through old games I have and discovered CS v1 .. anyway I used the product key on it to register the game via steam to play. Steam downloaded the game and latest version but when I tried to play it through steam, the full screen thing comes up for the game but freezes before there is a menu or anything. I Alt+Ctrl-Del to check it's status and says not responding... keeps happening so I'm stuck on this one.

Anyone have a solution to this?

by the way it happened exactly the same for Day of Defeat too.

do u have hl1 downloaded? those games need hl1 to run, you shouldnt have to buy it but it should do a reload of it.

Oh I stopped the hl1 download. I'll install that tonight then give it another go. thanks

It worked after I installed HL1
