Company of Heroes problem

I installed the game fine, then went to play multiplayer and the game downloaded and installed the first patch of about 100mb, then restarted the game and I went to multiplayer again and had to download another patch this time 185mb. Now the download bar was progressing very slowly so I thought it was just crappy speeds... anyway after about an hour I came back and it's all done but the game installation directory is GONE?! I restarted the comp and it's all completely gone and I found out the "patch" downloaded 2gb! - wtf is going on here?

EDIT - I found the game directory on the hdd but it only lets me play online if I download ANOTHER patch... is this normal? can't play skirmish or anything against comp, if i put the disc in it only has the install option.
