Battlefield 3 black screen / online access

I've had Battlefield 3 for a while now. It was working offline but since an Origin 2GB update all I get now is a black screen when I try to start. Googling tells me to either rollback to the original Origin or to reinstall the whole game. I haven't done either as the files are so large and there's no real evidence that it works [hopefully they'll be something simplier].

The other problem was getting online. After logging in and trying to join either a Quick Match, Co-op or Campaign game, I get the Matchmaking, Initializing or Joining Server box but there it stays and the game never starts.

I'm guessing the two are connected with the game being unable to start but wondering if I need to update the update at all?

Specs [just incase] - E8400, 560ti, 8GB, Thermaltake 575W.

It automatically updates and you can't play online without the update. In Origin right click on BF3 and hit repair install. If any of the update got messed up this will fix it.

Also when you click on join game, or campaign and BF3 shows up on the taskbar go ahead and click it.
