Default Sony tablet in the works?

If you thought Sony's NGP and first Android powered phone (Xperia Play) were enough, think again. According to an article posted today on Engadget, Sony is readying it's first tablet device. The tablet, currently code-named the "S1," will feature a 9.4 inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. In addition to the impressive display the device will sport a Tegra 2 processor, and come fully loaded will a Sony-personalized version of Google's Android 3.0, or "Honeycomb." According to Engadget's sources, this UI will boast features that rival the iPad's famed fluidity and functionality.

Coming from Sony and following in the footsteps of Sony Ericcson's Xperia Play, the device will be (as you might expect) a gaming platform. The device is 100% PlayStation certified, and Sony's recently announced PlayStation Suite software, which enables users to play PlayStation 1 titles on high powered Android tablets and phones, will come standard with the device. In addition to the suite coming pre-installed, several pre-loaded PlayStation 1 titles have also been promised, so make no mistake, the primary uses of this device will be media and gaming.

The above sketch is concept by Engadget, and features a curvature at the top of the device, one that will act as a stand when the tablet is placed on a flat surface. This will make the device easier to work with when at a desk or a table, and should help make typing and holding the device with one hand a lot easier on the arms. All in all the tablet looks like a very impressive little machine, and a more than ample introduction for Sony into the tablet market. A market, mind you, that is already flooded with Android tablets and the ever-dominating iPad. In regard to how much the device will cost and when you can expect to see it in stores, Engadget was told the wi-fi only version will put you back $599. That's $100 more than a wi-fi only iPad, but something tells me once this thing drops, you might not have a problem paying that premium. The planned ship window for the tablet is September, though whether or not Sony will stick with that is open to speculation.
