Default Obama Touts $18 Billion Internet Expansion Plan

Quote:
U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday made the trip to snow-covered Northern Michigan University to unveil a wireless Internet expansion plan intended to create more economic opportunities, The Washington Post reports. Obama's plan calls for $18 billion in federal funds to expand high-speed wireless Internet access to 98 percent of Americans over the next five years.

"To attract the best jobs and newest industries, we've got to out-innovate, out-educate, out-build, and out-hustle the rest of the world," Obama said in his speech.

The plan would use $10.7 billion to fund a new public-safety network so emergency services can communicate on a single system and still send videos and emails during disasters. Another $5 billion is being earmarked to expand wireless broadband in rural areas, and $3 billion would go towards government research in emerging wireless technologies.

In addition to all this, the government will try and raise about $27.8 billion by auctioning airwaves currently held by television broadcasters and government agencies.

Aren't we wasting enough money?

we pride ourselves with being one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, yet we lag far behind many other countries in terms of people having even DSL, and the speeds of our internet fail in comparison to many other countries. the problem is that the ISP's and TSP's won't expand their backbone systems because it's so expensive and there would be minimal payoff.

The President is trying to balance the negative influences of Capitalism, as Post #2 points to. This is one of his jobs. In the past, it would have been called "democratisation" in the true sense of the word. In addition, it's a smart move in the long run.

How is developing the most important communications infastrucure "losing money"

The worst spenditure is paying out all the money to unemployeed smucks that don't want to work.

Theres plenty of jobs that any able body person can do. Might as well spend money on developing a long term solution for all the unemployed IT TECH school that advertise on tv.

The government considers satelite internet wireless, it penetrates the majority of the states, and has HORRIBLE bandwidth regulations...

If this was true, my perfectly able body would be working. Just a thought. I've been unemployed because this area has been saturated by "minimum wage workers" due to the Katrina incident.

I'm sorry, 3 billion for "gov research" is a waste of cash.
